Next Generation Connected Car Digital Products

Seeing the shift in the competitive landscape, Viper tapped Valtech to revamp their connected car mobile products, dubbed Viper SmartStart 4.0. We were tasked with taking a product that was both technically and aesthetically dated further than any connected car applications had yet achieved. We started from square one with the project, carefully building a better user experience (UX), adding a modern user interface full of elements of delight, and then we completely rewrote the app for iOS on iPhones and Apple Watch, and Android phones and Android Wear devices. Combined with new hardware from Viper that allows faster response, less power consumption, and superior nationwide coverage, you end up with a connected car experience that once again far exceeds the rest of the industry.

We designed a new UI that allows easy gesture controls to start your car, with better feedback that the action has been completed. Locking and unlocking your car were the most accessed features from our UX research. We conveniently put those front and center in the new UI, adding easy to understand animations for actions and feedback.

Our UX research showed that additional tasks, while important, weren’t utilized as much. So we created a drawer for them that can easily be accessed to open the trunk, turn the panic alarm on and off, and go to the Geo-Features of the app. Users can also customize this drawer with their own functions.

/ Users can quickly ‘SmartPark’ their vehicle with a single tap, which marks your position on the map, and creates a timer that serves as a parking meter so you know when you need to move your car if you’re at a meter or timed parking area. Never forget where you parked again!

/ The app also allows map access for directions back to your parked vehicle.

/ Set SmartFences, which are Geolocation fences where the user chooses a point on the map and sets a radius around it to see when the car enters or exits that location. Need to know if your teenage daughter went to her boyfriends house? Now you can.

/ Set Lockdown mode to alert you if your vehicle moves. This is handy if you’re parking your car while on a trip and want an extra layer of security in case of theft or towing. As soon as your car moves, you are notified and can react in time to help.

Your teenage son has a lead foot? Set a speed alert to let you know anytime he goes over 75 mph. Know if your battery is low from your app, so you can make arrangements for a jump start. Get instant notification when your car alarm goes off. This is key in a theft situation, and also allows you to quickly disarm your vehicle if it was just an obnoxiously loud motorcycle passing by that set it off.
