System administrators working with Sitecore: What is Sitecore & How can you add value to your Sitecore team

30 septiembre, 2016

In the following article written for system admins, I’ll outline what Sitecore is, how it works and how a system admin (like you) will be able to add value to a Sitecore team. This is written from my perspective as a sys admin and is the first in a series of posts for system administrators working with Sitecore.

So, what's Sitecore?

Sitecore started as a CMS and over time has added different technologies to its core. It is a well-known platform that allows you to implement internet and intranet solutions. It is also a powerful, scalable and flexible platform.

As a .NET web application, Microsoft's products are essential to run Sitecore, such as

  • Internet Information Server
  • Windows Server
  • .NET Framework
  • Microsoft SQL Server

And last, but not least, Sitecore also requires MongoDB for Sitecore xDB.

How does Sitecore work?

As a scalable platform, Sitecore's environment may vary from client to client but the standard scenario is as follows:

  • 1 x Content Management
  • 1 x Content Delivery
  • 1 x Databases

Basically, Content Management allows content to be created and published to a website. And, Content Delivery is the website itself which makes the content created on CM available to your visitors.

As Sys Admin, how can I add value to a Sitecore team?

First of all, you’ll add value with your expertise and background! If your experience covers some of the initial Sitecore requirements from Microsoft's world, you’ll be able to add even more value.

Second, by learning Sitecore you will be able to conduct prerequisites, scale and harden setup, define security methods and more!

Further, you’ll be able to reduce the footprint of developers by delivering more quality and knowledge!

In our next post... we will cover a Sitecore installation and some concepts for system admins. Stay tuned.
