Microsoft Fabric has been evolving at a rapid pace, with new features and enhancements rolling out every month since its general availability in 2023. As the platform continues to grow and mature, here are some of the most exciting updates that will shape how organizations leverage data and analytics.
Fabric Databases: a new integration
Microsoft is integrating its powerful SQL Engine into Microsoft Fabric, enabling users to easily create application databases with automatic mirroring to OneLake. This new feature is currently in public preview, and it’s a game changer for managing and storing data. This integration makes it easier for businesses to spin up databases on demand while maintaining a seamless connection to their data lake, allowing for improved data management and scalability.
OneLake Catalog: simplifying data discovery and sharing
Finding and managing data across a unified platform just got easier with the OneLake Catalog. The catalog allows users to search for datasets using filters for domains, item types, owners, endorsements, tags and more. If you have access to a dataset, you can dive deeper into its lineage, permissions, activity etc. The “Govern” mode offers data owners recommendations to enhance data quality and compliance.
The catalog also integrates with Microsoft Purview, the company's data governance tool, enabling data discovery, curation and quality checks. The "Explore" mode is available now, with "Govern" coming soon in preview.
Open Mirroring: seamless data integration
Open Mirroring, now in preview, enables any application or data provider to mirror their data to OneLake. This feature allows organizations to ensure that their data stays up to date and accurate, with change data being continuously sent to OneLake. This opens up endless possibilities for integrating data sources, whether from legacy systems or new applications. It’s an essential tool for those looking to create custom integrations and workflows in their data architecture.
Free exam vouchers and new certifications
To support the growing Microsoft Fabric community, Microsoft is offering 5,000 free exam vouchers for the Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) certification exam. If you're eligible, be sure to complete the exam before the end of the year. Certification can increase earning potential by 10-15%.
In addition, Microsoft is introducing a new beta exam focused on Data Engineering: The Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700). This certification focuses on the Extract, Load and Transform (ELT) processes on Microsoft Fabric, perfect for those looking to specialize in data engineering on the platform.
These updates represent just the beginning of what’s to come with Microsoft Fabric. With new capabilities designed to simplify data management, enhance integration and accelerate AI adoption, Fabric is poised to be a key platform for businesses looking to transform their data strategies.
Be sure to explore these updates and stay ahead of the curve as Microsoft continues to roll out even more exciting features and enhancements.
